How do I know if OT is right for my child?
Our scope of practice in occupational therapy is vast. We help children gain confidence and independence with life skills and daily routines including dressing, hygiene & grooming, toileting, feeding, fine motor skills and social participation. We assess how retained reflexes, coordination, and visual skills impact function. We dive deep into sensory profiles and interoceptive awareness to build understanding of the child’s nervous system and help them learn how to regulate their emotions. We look at home, school and community environments and make adaptations that best support the child and family. Feel free to send me an inquiry to see if we might be a good fit.
What approaches and techniques do you use?
Neurodiversity Affirming- I recognize and respect the natural variation in neurotypes among individuals. This includes understanding that differences in brain function and behavior are a normal part of human diversity, rather than deficits or disorders that need to be fixed or cured. I presume competence and encourage individuals to embrace their unique strengths.
Play Based- I focus on safety and connection before building skill. I use special interests to genuinely learn and grow together. I provide a warm, empathetic and nonjudgmental space, fostering trust and safety for the child to engage in the therapeutic process.
Trauma Informed- I understand how trauma affects physical, emotional and cognitive development and how it can manifest in children’s behaviors and responses. I strive to create a safe environment that is predictable and supportive.
Family Centered- I take the time to understand the unique dynamics, strengths and supports needed within each family. This is one of the reasons I am passionate about doing therapy in the natural environment of the child- the home! There I am better able to assess the family’s routines, roles, cultural values and beliefs. I work together with families to set goals, prioritize interventions and make decisions regarding the wellness of the family as a whole.
Do you take insurance?
As I set up my practice in a new state I am starting with private pay only. This allows me to engage in the type of therapy that I have found best meets the needs of my clients. This includes focusing on sensory aspects which insurance companies typically do not cover. It also allows me to utilize a more holistic approach and look at the whole family, taking time with caregivers and siblings if needed.
How do you set your rates?
While I wish I could bill for my ‘OT service only’, there is so much more that goes into my practice, maintaining a small mobile business and advancing my education. I spend time outside of sessions researching, planning and communicating with families. There are fees for the business, website, licensure, assessments, documentation, and billing programs that are HIPAA compliant as well as equipment and supplies. I continuously take education courses beyond my licensure requirements because I want to give my families the latest and greatest and my very best, especially as we navigate this neurodiversity affirming paradigm shift.
While I currently don’t bill insurance, I am able to provide superbills with CPT codes to submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement.
I acknowledge that costs are rising everywhere and waitlists at other clinics are long. I do still want to be available for families who may not be able to pay full price at this time. For this reason, I am offering coaching channel slots and sliding scales to a limited number of families. Please reach out to inquire if I have any current reduced rate openings or availability on the coaching channel.
